Mystic Lilies
If this game had a mechanic to emulate ZUNpets it'd be perfect
Genre: Fantasy, Witch fantasy
Touchstones: Touhou, Little Witch Academia, Skullgirls
What is this game?: Mystic Lilies is a game about playing as quarreling witches who solve their problems via magical battles
How's the gameplay?: Mystic Lilies uses a deck of 52 cards for conflict resolution, each suit representing a different approach to solving the problem at hand, when you play a card that's the exact target of the check + 1 you Graze, getting an increased effect and triggering certain character abilities, this allows players to strategize further, players have a hand of cards instead of blindly drawing, meaning players can strategize around creating situations where a card in their hand would trivialize it. Characters also have a "Sign", a Sign usually has 2 active abilities that you may trigger by throwing away certain cards specified by the ability, and a "passive" which usually has some sort of drawing or hand control ability, as players are encouraged to get into conflicts stealing from opponent's hands is a common mechanic. Characters additionally have "Last Words", powerful final abilities they use, and then immediately exits the story... Yeah Mystic Lilies is not intended to be a long-running game, usually a one shot or 4 session campaign. Characters additionally have a "Path", this is mostly just to determine what their Diamonds suit stands for, as the game only calls it "Special", as well as determine details about their backstory, it additionally adds an Incident, if you fuck up, the GM may ask if they can begin your incident, starting some major, usually setting-ending threat
What's the setting (If any) like?: Determined by the player, there's setting building tools though
What's the tone?: Mystic Lilies tends to lean darker and drearier, its about petty drama bursting into violence, after all, so characters tend to lean petty, dark, and sinister
Session length: 1-3 hours, Drawing instead of rolling dice cuts down on time quite a bit sometimes
Number of Players: 3-6 players is what the book recommends
Malleability: Mystic Lilies' setting is generic enough to where you could run any story about witches in it I suppose, though keep in mind again that the game leans very, very short
Resources: A cheat sheet and an online character sheet are provided
Mystic Lilies leans into shorter games, but I think that's a fine enough game design space, its hand mechanics are very clever and lead to strategizing and planning being a major part of the game, which you love to see!
