Indie TTRPG of the Week

Breakfast Cult, High School horror

Breakfast Cult

Congratulations! You have been invited to the prestigious Occultar Academy, this pamphlet will serve as your pre-emptive guidance, so read carefully!

Genre: Horror, High School

Touchstones: Danganronpa, Assassination High, Lovecraftian mytho

What is this game?: Breakfast cult is a horror TTRPG about being high schoolers solving mysteries in their shady ass school

How's the gameplay?: Breakfast Cult utilizes a set of Fate Dice to solve things, Fate die only have 3 results, 0, 1, or -1, character creation is fairly simple, simply choosing 5 stats for your character, which are then added to rolls, as well as a few sentences which serve as their traits, which can be invoked to help with rolls, you also have maneuvers, powerful abilities that can do effectively anything you wish.

What's the setting (If any) like?: Breakfast is set in the near future, where governments have discovered a brand new energy source... which unfortunately leaves our world quite vulnerable to otherworldly threats, so as students in the government's premier occult knowledge high school, you learn how to manipulate this energy source, as well as how to deal with the otherworldly threats spawned by it, of course you're on a need-to-know basis, so sometimes you might need to dig up knowledge in the unknown side of things

What's the tone?: Suspenseful and strange, the academy isn't actively conspiring against you, but it REALLY feels like it, and the students aren't much better, not to mention shady corporations... yeah you're fucked, good luck!

Session length: 1-4 hours, its not a super complex game so its entirely dependent on how complex you want each session's plot to get

Number of Players: 4-6 players are recommended

Malleability: Plenty! its a fairly generic game, I'd recommend remaining within the academic horror concept, however

Resources: Breakfast Cult doesn't have any specific resources, but you could probably find stuff for FATE, the game its based on, the game also has 3 expansions, all great

Breakfast Cult is a great game with a familiar yet still alien setting, its world is fascinating and horrifying, and the characters are often eccentric but fun! it's a game i highly recommend
